Most cars have disc brakes on the front and on the rear. When disc brakes are not used on the rear, drum brakes are used, mostly dependent on the age of the vehicle.
The brake pads are typically made from a hard organic or metallic compound and are designed to withstand high heat and pressure. Brake pads often have locater depth shims built into them to deliberately create a grinding noise as they wear out, this alerts the driver to have their front brake pads replaced as soon as possible. If the pads continue to grind, the exposed metal of the calliper may wear a groove in the rotor. If such damage occurs, the entire brake rotor must either be machined or replaced.
Advancements in the braking system have seen the introduction of electronically controlled anti-lock braking systems used, these are known as ABS brakes. The ABS is a four-wheel system or two-wheel system that prevents wheel lock-up by automatically modulating the brake pressure during an emergency stop. By preventing the wheels from locking, it enables the driver to maintain steering control and to stop in the shortest possible distance under most conditions.
Your brake system should be inspected at least twice a year to ensure safe operation. |
